Why do I have so much plaque even if I brush and floss?
Brushing properly and thoroughly is important, but other factors can also contribute to plaque buildup, including how frequently you eat and snack throughout the day.
Every time you consume foods containing sugars or carbohydrates, bacteria in dental plaque can produce acids that lower the pH in your mouth. Saliva contains calcium and phosphate, which help protect and remineralize your teeth, but these minerals can also contribute to the formation of tartar when plaque isn't removed effectively.
If you eat frequently, bacteria have more opportunities to produce acids. And if you're not brushing and flossing with the proper technique, plaque can remain on your teeth and eventually harden into tartar.
That's why both your oral hygiene technique and your eating habits matter when it comes to managing plaque buildup.
