Understanding Endodontistry

Hernan Quintero DDS

What is an endodontist?

Endodontics is a specialized field of dentistry dedicated to treating the internal parts of your tooth. If your dentist referred you to an endodontist, it's probably because you're having a problem with the nerve inside your tooth. Your nerve could be dead, inflamed to a point that it won't return, or causing you pain. There is a two-year training requirement for a general dentist to become an endodontist.

An endodontist is specially trained to deal with the inside of your teeth and requires special equipment to treat your tooth internally, being very meticulous and detail-oriented.

What is a root canal?

An endodontist commonly performs root canals. A root canal means we're going to clean the inside of your tooth and replace the nerve inside with a specialized material that fills that space solidly. This prevents bacteria from entering or growing inside your tooth.

Any dentist technically can pull a tooth, but ideally, you want to see someone specially trained to do that. An endodontist usually determines the need for a root canal by performing tests on your teeth. These tests can be cold or heat tests, electrical tests, and tactile or percussion tests can also provide information. Insurance typically covers 50% of whatever they say they'll cover for root canals.
