Cavities in Miami & Key Biscayne, FL

Why do you keep getting cavities?

Sometimes patients tell me, "I don't eat sweets, so why do I keep getting cavities?" The truth is that several factors contribute to tooth decay, including bacteria, frequent snacking, dry mouth, and the protective minerals in your saliva.

Every time you eat foods containing sugars or carbohydrates, bacteria in your mouth can produce acids that lower the pH around your teeth. When the pH drops to approximately 5.5, enamel can begin losing minerals, a process called demineralization. Over time, repeated acid exposure can weaken the enamel and lead to cavities.

If we catch tooth decay in its earliest stages, before a cavity forms, we may be able to remineralize the enamel using fluoride and other preventive measures. However, without consistent brushing, flossing, and appropriate dietary habits, decay can continue to progress.

There are also things you can do after eating to help protect your teeth. Chewing sugar-free gum can stimulate saliva production, which helps neutralize acids in your mouth. Drinking plenty of water can also help wash away food particles and support saliva flow.

Brushing and flossing regularly are important for preventing cavities. After consuming acidic foods or drinks, it's generally recommended to wait about 30 to 60 minutes before brushing to avoid damaging temporarily softened enamel.
